OuiJ fbrdian More on Fires BY FORREST HUGHES As of Sunday afternoon, the total number of fires at Guilford College in the past two weeks had risen to nine. Bob White, head of Security, said that three outbreaks, all possibly arson, had occurred this past weekend. With one exception, all were in trash cans. On Friday at approximately 7:15 p.m., a fire was discovered in the hall of the first floor of Shore dormitory. It was promptly put out. Two fires occurred in the library on Saturday after noon between 2:20 and 2:30, one in the men's room in the basement and one in the stacks on the third floor. As a result of these small blazes, the stacks were closed off for the rest of the day. The most recent fires arose early Sunday morning on Senate The meeting opened with a moment of silence and roll was called. Dan Hurley, Phil Broadbent, Christie Fletcher, Janice Mosher, Mark Sieber, Pat Townsend, Jeff Wright, Leslie Zeldin, and Kathy Sebo were absent. There was no meeting of the Administrative Council this week, so John Janney was unable to request that additional students be able to sit on the Graduation Committee. There were only three names submitted (two were requested) so he will take the names to the next meeting and request that these students, as well as one faculty member be allowed to serve on the committee. The three students are Chip Smith, Jane Sprinkle, and Andrew White. Doug Neill submitted a list of suggestions for discussion on increasing judicial awareness. Various methods of communi cating facts about the Honor Code were discussed. It was decided that freshmen need to be made aware of the Honor Code through more emphasis i FAC, and that some of th confusions about the Code is du to a lack of consistency on the part of professors. Jim Newlin the second floor of Milner dormi tory. These last fires included the exception to the trash can trend. This time a roll of toilet paper was set aflame in the bathroom a few minutes after a fire in a trashcan outside the bathroom door had been extinguished. Preventive measures taken by the College against the possibility of more fires inlcude tripling security in the dorms on Saturday night and the removal of hall trashcans. Students are still patrolling the dorms each night, and will continue to do so until a solution to the fire problem is reached. It has not been determined whether all of the fires were set by the same person or indeed if every fire was deliberately set. White says the College has some Minutes December 8 suggested that the Senate and Faculty publish a booklet on the Honor Code to be distributed to all incoming students and faculty and to be kept as a reference source for the code, with revisions as needed. A series of articles for the Guitfordian on the Honor Code was also suggested. The Senate is going to send a memo to all faculty members about the issue of consistency and student concern over the Code, as well as sending representatives to the next faculty meeting to express the problem. WQFS was granted S3OO to pay their engineer for next semester. Without this grant they would not be able to pay an engineer, and therefore could not operate legally which would force them off the air. The Senate voted to withdraw funds from all dorms that do not have thirty copies of a revised constitution submitted by January 26. Extensions of this deadline will be granted to Mary Hobbs and the day students. Respectfully submitted, Amie Williams, Secretary Community Senate leads on the culprit or culprits, but has no proof which would stand up in court. The investigation of the fires has included the Greensboro Police Department, the Fire Department and the State Bureau of Investigation. The Federal Department of Investig ation will not be called in unless it is discovered that the incendiary action involved out-of-state factors. White characterized the fires as "nuisences" rather than destructive. All nine fires have been discovered and extinguished in time to prevent injury, but the continuing nightmare is that a fire will be set that is not detected. Needless to say, the entire college community has been kept on its toes during the past two weeks. Guilford is not the only college in the city threatened by an arsonist. Greensboro College reported two fires before Thanksgiving and one last week. Hopefully, all the fires can be stopped so that everyone will leave for Christmas vacation secure in the knowledge that their dormitory will still be there when they come back. New Rules Cafeteria rush hours are from 4:45 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Starting January 11 only as many people as is possible to prevent a backup will be allowed into the cafeteria. This is the only possible solution the Food Committee could come up with. A student member of the committee will be working to adjust the flow of people. If anyone knows of another way this problem can be solved, please put it in the Food Commit tee suggestion box at the Infor mation Desk in Founders. Also, if everyone would hand their ID cards to Mr. Kale, the checker, there would be fewer foul-ups in the Grill Room concerning numbers crossed off by mistake. Hot breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. during exam week. The following is a list of the Senate sub-committees and their members.
